Tinubu, US condemn Borno bomb attacks

President Bola Tinubu and the United States Diplomatic Mission in Nigeria on Sunday condemned the recent bomb attacks in the Gwoza Local Government Area (LGA) of Borno State, which resulted in the loss of 18 lives and injured over 30 others.

The attacks, carried out by four suicide bombers on Saturday, have been described as “desperate acts of terror” by the president.

The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) reported that four suicide bombers detonated improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Gwoza, Borno State. More than 30 people were injured in the attack, which was one of the most deadly in the state in recent months. The severity of injuries ranges from abdominal ruptures to skull and limb fractures.

Tinubu, in a statement by his spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, commiserates with the victims of the attacks, the families of the deceased, as well as the government and people of the state.

He said the attack is a clear manifestation of the pressure mounted against terrorists and the success achieved in degrading their capacity to launch offensives.

Tinubu, however, vowed that the purveyors of wanton violence would have a certain encounter with justice and that these cowardly attacks were only an isolated episode.

He added that his government will not allow the nation to slither into an era of fear, tears, sorrow, and blood.

The President states that his administration is taking necessary measures to secure citizens, noting that efforts will be redoubled to ensure that those who trouble the nation, dispatch precious lives, and disrupt law and order are completely removed.

Meanwhile, the United States Diplomatic Mission in Nigeria, in a statement on X, also condemned the attacks in the strongest possible terms.

The mission described the acts as horrific and a cruel disregard for human life.

It noted that the “abhorrent attacks” are a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by terrorism in the region.

The mission added that it is committed to partnering with Nigeria as it works to defeat terrorism and bring the perpetrators of these heinous acts to justice.

The statement read, “The United States condemns in the strongest possible terms the horrific attacks that took place in Gwoza, Borno State, on June 29. These reprehensible acts of violence show a cruel and heartless disregard for human life. We offer our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those killed and wish a full recovery to the injured.

“These abhorrent attacks are a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by terrorism in the region. The U.S. Diplomatic Mission in Nigeria is committed to our partnership with Nigeria as it works to defeat terrorism and bring the perpetrators of these heinous acts to justice.”
