Telecom employers lament multiple taxation in sector

Employers under the aegis of the Association of Telecommunications, Information Technology, Cable Satellite Network Operators and Allied Services Employers’ of Nigeria (ATICEN) have bemoaned multiple taxations in the sector, stating that the attempt to collect the taxes by public actors was disrupting telecom services across the board.

President of ATICEN, Adede Williams, said this during a stakeholders’ meeting, stating that operational difficulties and socio-economic challenges affect their cost and bottom line negatively.

According to him, most of the taxes and levies are illegal, hence should be eliminated. Williams maintained that there is a need to remove barriers to smoothen operations in the telecom industry.

He equally urged the government to provide some form of intervention to address the challenges in the sector. He said the union, which got registered last year was set to protect the interest of its members, create employment opportunities and ensure development in the sector.

He said the goal of the stakeholders’ meeting was to share vital industry information at all levels and to examine, and proffer pragmatic ideas to the challenges facing the industry, as well as fears confronting Nigerian employers.

“As Chief Executive Officers, we owe a duty to our employees to go beyond providing employment. This is why we are here today deliberate on the relevancy of our association in helping ourselves to identify the way forward in some of the challenges faced in the industry,” he said.
