Student dies in Anambra seminary school fire


A fire incident that occurred at the Bishop Crowther Memorial Seminary School in Awka, the Anambra State capital, left one student dead.


The fire broke out around 11.30 pm on Saturday, according to a statement from the Media Unit of the Anambra State Fire Service.

Chukwudi Chiketa, the state’s Fire Service Chief, reported that the fire had broken out in one of the school’s hostels.


Chiketa said firefighters and one of the fire trucks were deployed immediately to the scene of the incident, and the fire was contained.

He noted he arrived at the scene at 10:55 am on Sunday for a firsthand inspection and assessment of the level of damage caused by the fire outbreak.


“The cause of this fire is still unknown, but it’s confirmed that one of the students died at the scene and has been taken to a mortuary,” Chiketa said.

According to the principal, there was no other casualty, and no injury was recorded, Chikeja added.
