Seven rescued as two-storey building collapses in Mushin

• LASBCA warns against illegal construction

Seven persons were rescued yesterday when a two-storey building collapsed at 12 Cameroun Street, off Ewenla, in the Mushin area of Lagos State.

The survivors, three females and four males, were taken to a hospital for treatment. The building, which housed the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Apapa Family LP. 66, Area 02, Region 55, and residential apartments, collapsed following a downpour.

It was rumoured that a child died after he had been rescued alive. Officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) however denied the claim, stressing that the most critical cases were responding to treatment.

The area was cordoned off as LASBCA marked adjoining buildings for demolition, and called for the documents of others. In a notice posted on some buildings in the area, the agency demanded within seven working days, the submission of: Development Permit from Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority, Letter of Authorisation from Lagos State Building Control Agency, Evidence of construction stage inspection, Approved Architectural drawings, General Contractors’ All Risk Insurance Policy, Letter of introduction of professionals involved in the project with copies of their professional certificates and current practicing licenses, etc.

It said failing this, the agency shall be compelled to invoke relevant sections of the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law (Amendment) 2019.

Meanwhile, the state government restated its warning on the erection of buildings without necessary permits, saying it is determined to arrest the spate of illegal constructions and building collapse in the state.

General Manager of LASBCA, Gbolahan Oki, disclosed this while reacting over a building with illegal attachment that collapsed in the Mushin axis of the state.

Oki warned developers and property owners against illegal constructions and conversions, especially attachments to existing buildings without approval and strict supervision by the agency.
