Sanwo-Olu admits housing deficit, commissions 270 home units in Egan-Igando estate


• Gives N10m cash award to LASU’s best graduating student
• Says motivation brings out quality

Lagos State Government, in its determination to provide decent, affordable housing for residents, has commissioned a 270-unit (Cluster 1) Housing Estate at Egan in Igando-Ikotun Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State.


The state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who spoke during the official commissioning of the estate, said the landmark project marks a significant milestone in the ongoing commitment to providing affordable and quality housing for the people of Lagos State.Sanwo-Olu said that to eliminate the deficit and achieve a 21st-century economy, there is a need to partner with private investors to bridge the housing gap.

He noted that the housing shortage in Lagos State is real, but his administration is determined to reduce it by implementing policies that ensure the availability of decent homes for all, regardless of ethnic, religious, or political affiliations.

The Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, said the completion of 270 units of two-bedroom apartments is a vital step towards alleviating the housing deficit in Lagos, hence bringing succour to the beloved people of Igando-Ikotun LCDA in Alimosho Local council.

He, however, called for more private participation in strengthening the resolve to reduce the housing deficit in the state. He urged the beneficiaries of the estate and all other state government-owned estates to take ownership of the entire projects, particularly in the aspect of maintenance of the facilities and basic infrastructure put in place to make it livable and habitable for all, irrespective of ethnicity, political affiliations or religious differences.

MEANWHILE, Sanwo-Olu, yesterday, announced a cash award of N10 million to the overall best graduating student of Lagos State University (LASU), Olaniyi Mubaraq Olawale of Accounting Education, who graduated with a CGPA of 4.98. The governor announced in his remarks at the grand finale of the 27th convocation ceremony of the institution held at the Buba Maruwa Auditorium.

Sanwo-Olu, who stressed the importance of rewarding hard work, said it is a motivation that brings out quality, which eventually benefits the country. He said: “As a society, we have a responsibility to send a strong message out that academic excellence must never be underestimated or taken for granted in our society. Our young people must see a reason to hunger for it with the same energy and enthusiasm reserved these days for artistic and sporting success.”

In her remarks, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, noted that since her emergence as LASU’s VC, the institution had made significant progress in the area of learning, research and innovation.
