The Oyo/Osun Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service said it generated N6.3b revenue for the month of May as well as increased vigilance to end illegal importation of goods into the country.
The Controller of the command, Dr Ben Oramalugo, revealed this at the Oyo/Osun Area Command headquarters, where he gave account of revenue generation and anti-smuggling activities for May, particularly in light of the various prevailing economic challenges facing the country.
Oramalugo said that the command educated various stakeholders within its area of responsibility on the importance of adhering to customs regulations which paid off, as there had been a significant reduction in under-declarations.
He said that the introduction of advanced technology solutions, such as the Nigeria Customs Service Modernisation Project, had streamlined processes and enhanced transparency.
Giving account of revenue generated, he said: “Despite the prevailing economic challenges, command officers have worked diligently to ensure the collection of customs duties and taxes in accordance with the mandate of the Nigeria Customs Service.
“The revenue generated thus far reflects the command’s commitment to contributing towards the economic stability of our nation.
“I will like to point out that the command still has a herculean task ahead, as the command’s revenue target is at N141.6b.”
On anti-smuggling activities, he said: “The command’s has maintained a robust stance against smuggling activities within our jurisdiction despite the economic hardships that often exacerbate smuggling tendencies. Command officers have remained vigilant and proactive in intercepting illicit goods and apprehending perpetrators as we recognised the grave implications of smuggling on national security, economic stability, and public health.”
For the months of April, May and some parts of June, the command has intercepted and seized 504 wraps of cannabis sativa worth N15.8b, one trailer load of 50kg foreign parboiled rice worth N50.2b as well as Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) worth N5,521,500.
