Groups hold awareness walk

Oyo State Government has charged groups and residents of the state to work together to break the stigma surrounding mental health, saying all and sundry must come together as a community to support those who need help most.

The state’s Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, Toyin Balogun, gave the charge during a mental health awareness walk, with the theme: “Moving Together For Trauma Care,” organised by Star Children Development Initiative in collaboration with Jars Education Institute, the United States (U.S.).

Part of the activities marking the mental week was a road walk from Kunle Ara Pharmacy to the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Inclusion. The commissioner, officials of her ministry, Fadesola Adelani of the Star Children Development Initiative, officers of the Red Cross Society, and others, were part of the walk.

Balogun said it was imperative to ignite a movement of compassion and understanding and be voices that speak up for those who are silenced by their pain. In her remarks, Country Director of the Star Children Development Initiative, Fadesola Adelani, said trauma is real and this awareness is a powerful statement that trauma care is a collective responsibility and is a reminder that no one should suffer alone.
