Old boys plant 40 oil palm seedlings to mark anniversary in Imo

To compliment the state and Federal Governments food sustainability policies, the old boys of the Uboma Secondary School, Ipkerejere, Ihitte Uboma, Imo State, have commenced planting of 40 oil palm seedlings in the institution’s premises.

The pilot planting was kicked-started by the 1983 set of the institution.

The National Chairman of the group, who is a Comptroller of Immigration, Silas Okonkwo, said the gesture was attracted by a former Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, adding that in addition to the stadium project, the old boys Association fenced, and provided other facilities at cost of over N10m.


He noted that the gesture was part of their resolve to grow a sustainable agro based- economy, and utilise substantial expanse of land. “The palm seedling planting is critical to us.”

The Senior Prefect of the set, Chief Daniel Azubuike, and other alumni members present at the ceremony include a former Minister of State for Education, Nwajiuba; former Governor of the state, Emeka Ihedioha; a consultant to the National Assembly, Amb. Timothy Ihemadu; a former senator who represented Imo West Senatorial district, Frank Ibezim; a United -States -based Information and Technology expert, Anthony Omereonye; the acting Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Mrs. Nonye Edomobi; among others.

Azubuike said: “We are going to plant 40 palm seedlings as a symbol of our 40 years anniversary. My class decided to plant these palm seedling trees, as a means of using same to keep the remaining part of the school expanse of land, and promote agricultural programme; protect the ultramodern stadium built by the Federal Government.”

The Senior Secondary section Principal, Mrs. Iwuoha, commended the 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983 sets for their untiring commitment to uplift the institution as the centre of excellence.
