Four girls drugged at Osun birthday party by traffickers wake up en route Libya
A final-year undergraduate of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has been mobbed to death on campus over alleged theft of phone.
The Guardian learnt that the deceased, whose name was yet to be known, was beaten to death by an angry mob on Monday.
The incident was said to have happened in the Awo Hall of the institution.
The deceased was rushed to the Emergency Medicine Department of OAU Teaching Hospital on Tuesday afternoon after he started experiencing excruciating pain owing to the assault he suffered but was confirmed dead at the hospital yesterday.
Confirming the incident, the President, Great Ife Students’ Union, Festus Olayiwole, described the final year student’s death as sad, saying arrests and prosecution of those connected with the mob action were ongoing.
Olayiwole announced immediate suspension of activities on Executive Council of Awo Hall till police conclude investigation into the matter.
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of OAU, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, who confirmed the incident, said: “The management will make its position known concerning that, we are still trying to investigate the circumstances that led to the death of the student.”
Meanwhile, Osun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a middle-aged man, Adebisi Muideen, for allegedly trafficking four teenage girls from Osun State to Kano State en route Tripoli in Libya.
Muideen was arrested by operatives of Osun State Police Command, following complaints made by parents of the victims.
According to a statement signed by the state’s Police Police Relations Officer (PPRO), Yemisi Opalola, the suspect invited the young girls to a birthday party at a hotel in Ile-Ife and gave them food and drinks.
After taking the food and drinks suspected to have been drugged, the girls slept off and later woke up in Kano State en route to Libya.
“However, three of the girls escaped miraculously in Kano and called their parents who reported the matter to the police,” Opalola said.
Three of the girls have been reunited with their families, but the whereabouts of the fourth girl were not known at press time.
The suspect, according to the police, said the girls willingly accepted to go to Libya to work.
He said his brother who resides in Tripoli instructed him to get girls for him and send them to one man in Kano, who will take them to Libya from Kano.
The suspect said when he got to the man’s house in Kano, he met so many girls that were being processed for the journey to Libya.
Opalola said that the case would be diligently investigated and charged to court at the completion of the investigation.
