In a move to increase the adoption of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) across Nigeria, the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) has called for heightened consumer awareness to drive utilisation and reduce associated risks from using biomass for cooking.

The company’s General Manager, Finance, Fatima Adanan, underscored the need for a campaign to transition biomass users to LPG for cooking, highlighting that the objective is to boost LPG usage in Nigeria, leading to a transformation in the current energy mix and fostering a more extensive adoption of LPG.

In a concerted effort to enhance the use of LPG and uphold the company’s pledge to deliver 100 per cent of its LPG production to the domestic market, it was announced that the company consistently supplies close to 500,000 metric tonnes of LPG yearly to meet the demands of the market.

According to the company’s clarification, they supplied the domestic market with 493,000 metric tonnes of LPG in 2023, 498,000 metric tonnes in 2022, and provided 399,000 metric tonnes in 2021.
The company emphasised that it is currently addressing 30 per cent of the nation’s total LPG demand, currently estimated to be around 1.5 million metric tons.

At the National Oil Companies Forum, a sideline session at the Nigeria International Energy Summit (NIES), in Abuja, Adanan stressed that NLNG remains committed to promoting the adoption of cooking gas as a superior and environmentally friendly cooking fuel, aiming to safeguard consumers and the environment from risks associated with alternative fuels, which aligns with its environmental safety priorities.
