NBA Ikeja tasks lawyers on professionalism, commences law week

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja branch has called on legal professionals to protect the sanctity of the rule of law in the discharge of their duties as it commences 2024 law week.

The Ikeja NBA Chairman, Mr Oluwaseyi Olawumi and the Law Week Committee chairman, Mr. Adekunle Adejuyigbe (SAN), said it is their duty as legal practitioners to adapt to changes, uphold the highest standard of professionalism, and contribute meaningfully to the development of the legal system.

While speaking with newsmen at the Bar Centre on the yearly law week, which commenced on June 21, NBA chairman said, lawyers will chart a path on the challenges and opportunities that the legal profession faces in recent times.

Olawumi said it will be a celebration of the commitment to justice, the rule of law and the continuous development of legal practice in Nigeria.

He encouraged all members and the public to participate actively in the events of the Law Week, noting that they should use the opportunity to learn, share and grow together.

Also, Adejuyigbe (SAN) said the Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Lawal Pedro (SAN) and other legal luminaries will share their expertise on contemporary legal issues, including the impact of technology on the legal profession, human rights advocacy, and the role of lawyers in economic development. He said that the theme is: “Public Governance in troubled times: Safeguarding the Rule of Law.”

According to him, speakers and panelists include; Mr.Kanu Agabi (SAN) (keynote speaker); Mr. Lawal Pedro (SAN); Prof. John Oluwole Akintola; the national president of CLASFON, Yemi Ademolekun and Norrison Quakers (SAN). Others are Dr. Olaniyi Olopade (SAN); Afolabi Selebo; Tokunbo Wahab; Dr. Oluyinka Olumide and Prof. Olarenwaju Fagbohun (SAN).

“As part of our commitment to give back to the community, our legal aid clinics will provide free legal services to those in need, ensuring that Justice is accessible to all. This is a testament to our dedication to serving the public and upholding the principles of equity and fairness.

“Our social events will facilitate inter-professionals, fostering a sense of camaraderie and collaboration. As we embark on this week of activities, I want to emphasise our unwavering commitment to excellence in legal practice. The legal profession is the bedrock of a just society, and we must continuously strive to uphold its integrity, independence and professionalism that our calling demands,” he said.
