Erstwhile Commissioner of Police for Benue State, Ibezimako Aghanya, has stated that the killers of her wife, Eunice, may be burglars, not assassins as widely suspected.

Unknown persons murdered Mrs. Aghanya in her Makurdi residence last Friday.

Narrating the story of his wife’s death to Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, who paid him condolence visit, the former CP said he received a call from his daughter, that her mother was not picking her call, that Friday afternoon.

The former police boss said he quickly called someone who told him that he sighted his wife’s car somewhere.

“So, I decided to send a message to her phone, saying if it is kidnappers, I am ready to negotiate with them. But there was no answer. My cousin went to the house, opened the window and saw her lying on the ground and when he went in, he discovered she was dead.

“From investigation, I believe that someone came into the house to steal and when she met the person, the person probably knew her very well and decided to kill her to cover all evidence. My son had called her that Friday about 12.30 p.m., but her phone was switched off. Probably, it was then that she was murdered. She might have recognised the person and he came back and killed her,” he told the consolers.

Aghanya added that the murder was not related to his status as Benue CP 18 years ago, noting that the deceased had always rejected police escort, even when he was CP.

In his remarks, Governor Ortom expressed grief over the murder of Mrs. Aghanya whom she described as ‘an industrialist’ that contributed immensely to the economic development of the state.

Noting the inadequacy of police officers in the country, the governor urged President Muhammadu Buhari, the Police Service Commission (PSC), and the inspector-General of Police (IGP) to resolve the crisis surrounding the recruitment of 10,000 policemen and hasten the engagement of policemen to save Nigerians.

Ortom, who condemned the killing, promised to support security operatives with everything possible to apprehend those who carried out the gruesome murder.
