Why Is Messi Going to Inter Miami?

Lionel Messi has so much to celebrate after winning the World Cup for the 2022/2023 season. However, his current contract with Paris Saint-Germain will expire on June 30th. After that date, he will be considered a free agent in the football world. With this in mind, he has been brainstorming his next move and which football team to join.

He will not be going back to Barcelona to play for their team because of moving to Saudi Arabia without their permission. Messi decided to try joining Inter Miami in Major League Soccer in the United States to propel his football career in a unique and fun way.

This contract worth $400 million transitioning to the new team will also be financially lucrative for him. Messi will get a cut of earnings from the MLS Season Pass, a notable streaming service that Apple offers. Through the grapevine, Messi may also have a contract in the works with Adidas that is still in development.

Messi’s Current Stats

He scored 21 goals total for the competitions in the 2022 to 2023 season. The expected goals rate stayed the same, only going down by 0.01 to 0.47 from 2021/2022.

Messi takes about four shots (3.96 to be exact) every hour and a half of gameplay. His shots on target improved to 1.72, up from 1.26 in the 2021 to 2022 season. His shot conversion rate skyrocketed from 9.57% in 2021/2022 to 13.16% in 2022/2023, a staggering 3.59% improvement.

He has created about 2.92 chances every 90 minutes in Coupe de France, for the UEFA Champions League, and during Ligue 1. Hence, Messi’s average assist statistics were higher compared to 2021/2022 at 20 throughout the key competitions. While his passing accuracy and number of successful passes decreased, Messi improved his number of passes into the playbox at 8.23 up from 6.50 in the 2021/2022 season.

The 35-year-old football legend has made more dribbles at 3.05 every 90 minutes in 2022/2023 compared to 2.81 in the prior season. While he is more of an offensive player than a defensive one, he did improve his tackle success rate from 23.08% in 2021/2022 to 73.33% in 2022/2023.
