Imo CP orders probe into alleged extortion, human rights violation against officers

CP Aboki Danjuma, Imo State Commissioner of Police

Imo State Commissioner of Police (CP), Aboki Danjuma, has set up an investigating team to probe allegations of extortion and violation of human rights levelled against officers of the command.

Danjuma was reacting to allegations made by National Coordinator of Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), Emmanuel Onwubiko. He asked the team to look into the claims and ensure that any officer found wanting is severely sanctioned, in accordance with extant laws.

The commissioner reiterated the command’s unwavering commitment to ensuring its officers and men uphold the highest standards of professionalism, respect the rule of law, and shun every form of corrupt practice.

Danjuma called on HURIWA to assist the team with detailed information that would assist it in carrying out a comprehensive investigation. Also, the commissioner mandated Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, Tactical Team Commanders, and Traffic Officers to embark on strict supervision of their subordinates and clamp down on extortion and all forms of corruption.

He said it is illegal and unprofessional for any police officer to demand money from a citizen before a complaint is lodged, a distress call is responded to, or a suspect is released on bail. He warned that supervisory officers who fail to fulfil their oversight duties will also face sanctions.

He said: “The good people of Imo State are advised to take advantage of the emergency lines: CP Monitoring Unit 08066493801; Complaint Response Unit (CRU) 08061247069; Public Complaints Bureau (PCB) 07067419738; X-Squad 08103341610; Command Control Room 08034773600, and report any recalcitrant officer acting contrary to the professional ethics of the Force.

“Together, we shall continue to improve the quality of police service delivery in the state.” Danjuma appreciated the people of Imo State for their peaceful disposition during the Yuletide season and efforts in the fight against crime and criminality in 2023. He solicited more cooperation and support through the provision of credible information that could assist the police in their job.
