Group urges Lagos gov to emulate others on Amotekun

The Yoruba One Voice (YOV), yesterday, appealed to Lagos State Government to inaugurate the Southwest Security Network, Amotekun in the state.

It expressed concern about the spate of insecurity in Lagos State, wondering why it took Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu almost a year to inaugurate the Southwest Security outfit, as it was done in other states of the region.

In a statement issued by its Secretary General, Dr. Shina Okanlomo, the group, comprising some Yoruba indigenes in the Diaspora, said they were unhappy with the security situation in the state, adding that Lagos was becoming volatile with activities of cultists and ritual killers.

“How do you want us to come back home where our lives and that of our families back home aren’t safe? Nigerians in the Diaspora are worried. None of us can contemplate coming to Nigeria without giving a thought to the porous security situation in the country.

“Most unfortunate is the fact that a city like Lagos tops the list of the most volatile states in the region. This is not unconnected with the activities of cultists and ritual killers who have been terrorising the state,” the statement reads.

The group lamented that the Amotekun Bill was signed into law in March 2020, but up till now, the security outfit was yet to begin operations in Lagos State.

“With Ogun State beginning its operations in earnest, the state has risen to the occasion with operation Amotekun. The full operation of the security outfit will ensure safety of life and property in the state,” it added.

Okanlomo said the delay in the commencement of Amotekun in Lagos was dangerous, as that would adversely affect its economy, adding: “No reasonable investor will risk investing in a state where security of life and property cannot be guaranteed.

“Just recently, herdsmen killed a farmer, Ridwan in his farm at Bole Village on Iba Road in Osun State. This is most unfortunate that terrorists, marauding herdsmen kill people at will and we cannot continue to live in fear in our own country.”
