Group tasks EFCC, ICPC on Yari’s probe

Yari
Coalition of 16 civil society organisations has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and other relevant agencies to conclude its probe of former Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari.

The ex-governor is being tried for alleged fraud perpetrated during his tenure as governor between 2011 and 2019.

During a press briefing in Lagos yesterday, the Executive Director, Centre for Public Accountability, Olufemi Lawson, decried the pervading corruption that had been retarding the country’s progress for long.

The group bemoaned the level of insecurity in the country and made reference to the 317 schoolgirls abducted in Zamfara State last week.

The group hinged its focus on Zamfara due to the level of banditry in the state coupled with its findings indicating that it arose because of the lacklustre performance of successive administrations in the state, which allegedly became worse during the regime of Yari.

“It was widely reported recently that Yari was invited and grilled by the EFCC for several hours over alleged criminal diversion of the state funds while in office,” it stated.

The group charged the new EFCC Chairman, Abdurasheed Bawa, to wage war against corruption in the country.

At the briefing were the National Coordinator, Campaign Against Impunity, Sina Loremikan; Activist for Good Governance, Declan Ihekaire; Alex Omotetimise among others.
