Govt commissions 40 megawatts hydropower project in Gombe

40 megawatts Dadin Kowa Hydropower Project in Gombe State

The Federal Government has commissioned a 40 megawatts Dadin Kowa Hydropower Project in Gombe State, which has the capacity to generate electricity, irrigate over 30,000 hectares of farmland and process over 50 million litres of water per day.

A conglomerate, MABON Group, secured a 25-year build-operate-transfer contract to build the hydropower plant, and the project, which had since been completed, is already contributing power to the national grid.

Speaking during the commissioning, Managing Director of MABON Limited, Richard Madububyi, said the completion of the hydropower project is a testament to the power of collaboration. He added that it took effort and resources from stakeholders to ensure the success of the project.

He noted that the project would produce 40 megawatts of electricity for the people and companies that reside in the region. Madububyi, therefore, thanked federal and state governments for their efforts towards making the project a reality.

Madububyi assured stakeholders of effective and efficient management of the facility, adding that company is currently working to increase its irrigation water supply from 3,000 to 5,000 hectares, and also to improve contribution to the national grid by provision of black stent operation where necessary.

In his remarks, the state governor, Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya, said the completion and commissioning of the power project represents a milestone in the energy independence of the North East, stressing that the Dadin Kowa and the Kashimbila power projects were the only grid-generating plant in the North East, making them very important to power stability in the region.
