After participating actively in Nigeria’s electioneering season as one of the most vocal musician-activists advocating better governance, prominent Nigerian rapper Folarin Falana, professionally known as Falz, has crowned his efforts with a new socio-conscious song dubbed, Owa.
Produced by Chillz, the song sees Falz and Tekno speak on social issues, including police brutality, fuel scarcity, insecurity, unemployment, mass poverty, among other issues that have bedevilled Nigeria’s enduring populace since 1999.
“As regards the current situation of the country, it is time for us to stop and get a New Nigeria. We need new leaders that can move this country to the right destination and at the right time, the time is now. We need to collectively shout Owa!” Falz tells Weekend Beats.
As Nigerians decide their political future, today, Falz and Tekno’s Owa sounds like that rave-of-the-moment jam, similar to what Davido’s Fem was during the #EndSARS saga circa three years ago. The chemistry between Tekno’s hook, swiping on a catch phrase as relatable as ‘Owa’ (Yoruba phrase to indicate stops during a journey), to drum some encouragement into the ears of the electorate to make the right choice today.
Falz, whose discography is dominated by socio-conscious music such as his sophomore album, Stories That Touch (2015), and his fourth album, Moral Instruction (2018), continues to blaze a trail in Nigeria’s music scene as one of the few artistes actively using their platforms for activism. Having been raised by one of Nigeria’s most respected Senior Advocates, Barrister Femi Falana, the young maverick and trained lawyer continues to use his voice as a tool for change.
