Don’t push ASUU to embark on strike again, VCs tell FG

Ochefu

The Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU) has again, urged the Federal Government to yield to the last agreement reached with university teachers to avert another round of industrial crisis in tertiary institutions.

The secretary-general of the committee, Prof. Yakubu Ochefu, who disclosed this to journalists, said the committee also raised similar concerns last year, when the government reached an agreement with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and encouraged each party to go by the terms of the resolution.

Ochefu noted that at the moment, there are already trust issues between the parties concerning the agreement.

He noted that the failure of successive governments to honour agreements with ASUU was responsible for incessant strikes and disruptions in the academic calendar.

He pleaded with the Federal Government not to allow a repeat of such disruptions by implementing the agreement with the unions.

Ochefu noted that the last agreement between both parties would be one year in a few months with most of the terms yet to be implemented. This, he noted, has created some level of distrust between the two parties.

Reminding that industrial action cannot do the nation any good, Ochefu enjoined both parties to prevent it.
