In its bid to ensure that all children of school age are enrolled in school, the Abia State government has warned parents and guardians to either enroll their children and wards or be punished.

In this regard, Governor Alex Otti announced that an enabling law that would prescribe the punishment for culprits would soon be enacted by the State House of Assembly.

Speaking in Umuahia, the state capital, during the 2024 Children’s Day celebration with the theme, ‘Enhancing the total well-being of the Nigerian child through quality education and skills development,’ Otti said that his administration would do everything to ensure that primary and post primary schools have basic primary standard facilities, such as laboratories, hostels, teachers quarters and libraries with modern facilities.

Adding that welfare of children would be sustained, he also announced the abolition of levies for special books at the School For The Blind at Afara, Umuahia. He has also donated a bus to the school, directing the Commissioner for Housing, Chaka Chukwumerije, to immediately commence the school’s perimeter fencing.
