It is the maiden edition of the tournament, but already the promoters are looking at ways of making the OBJ Open one of the best tournaments in the West Africa sub-region.
The competition, which will hold from December 8 to 13 at the newly upgraded golf course at the Abeokuta Golf Club, Ogun State, will feature about 26 professionals from across the country and one Ghanaian.
The real gist, however, is that the club and its sponsors have lined up mouth-watering prizes for the players, including a N1 million reward for the winner of the competition.
There are also other sundry rewards for the ladies and junior players, who are expected to light the wee-long competition.
According to the organisers of the competition, the OBJ Open “will feature a tournament for amateurs and one for junior golfers/school students.
“Set pieces will include a ceremonial tee-off to be attended by a range of dignitaries and a closing ceremony incorporating the prize-giving ceremony.”
Captain of the club, Chief Bode Mustapha, told The Guardian “students from Day Waterman College, Abeokuta, and others secondary schools in the city will be part of the competition, which is being sponsored by First Bank.
“We want to use this edition to test the waters and then take it from there.”
He disclosed that the Ladies and amateurs will have their day in the sun on Saturday and Sunday, professionals will take the centre stage on Thursday and Friday, adding, “there are prizes for all the categories of players, who are coming from different clubs in the country.
“Among the dignitaries expected to grace the event are former Senate President, David Mark, former Governor of Osun State, Olagunsoye Oyinlola and other eminent personalities.”
